Pre-arrival guide for junior students

Helping junior students to prepare for their trip to Jersey

The following guide will help students and parents prepare for their trip to Jersey, understand the arrival arrangements and know what to expect on their first day. Please read this carefully before travelling.

The trip is a great opportunity to improve English, discover a new place and meet people from around the world. We encourage students to get involved, speak English as much as possible and have a go at activities they may not have tried before. The more they take part, the more they’ll get out of their stay!

GETTING IN TOUCH

Speak to the team

We want every student to feel safe, supported and able to enjoy their stay in Jersey. Our team is here to help throughout the school day and during activities, whether students need to speak to a teacher or our welfare team. Outside school hours, they can speak to their host or residence staff. We encourage students to ask for help whenever something is worrying them or they are unsure what to do.

Emergency number

If a student needs urgent help at any time during their journey or stay in Jersey, they should contact St Brelade’s College using one of the following emergency numbers:

  • +44 7797 714723
  • +44 7797 714720

Students should save these numbers before departure and keep them accessible throughout their journey and stay.

BEFORE TRAVELLING

Travel documentation

  • Passport: A valid passport is required for travel to Jersey from outside the Common Travel Area. Please check the passport and entry requirements for the journey before travelling. Some countries require the passport to remain valid for a specified period beyond the travel dates. Requirements vary depending on nationality, destination and route. Also check the travel document requirements of the airline/ferry operator.
We recommend bringing a copy of the passport and keeping it separately from the original.
  • ETA: Most European visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), rather than a visa to visit Jersey but please check this on the UK Government website. An ETA can be applied for using the official UK ETA app or online via the UK Government website. An ETA costs £20 per person, including children, and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It is recommended to apply at least three working days before travelling, due to processing time.
  • Under 18s using the ferry chaperone service will also need:
    • The original authorisation for a child to travel abroad without a parent (Autorisation de sortie du territoire). Photocopies are not accepted. Please make sure it has been signed by the parent/guardian.
    • A copy of the identity document of the parent or legal guardian who signed the authorisation.
    • A photocopy of the family record book (livret de famille), to prove that the person who signed the authorisation is the child’s legal representative. This document is only required if the parent’s surname differs from the child’s.

Please check travel arrangements carefully before departure.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend that students take out travel insurance when booking their trip. This should provide cover if a student needs to cancel their course before departure or during their stay due to circumstances such as illness, emergency medical expenses, travel costs and personal belongings. Special insurance for language-learning stays is available from some insurance companies.

Weather

British weather can sometimes be unpredictable, so please bear this in mind when deciding what to pack. Due to its geographical location, Jersey enjoys some of the warmest summers and mildest winters in the British Isles. Average monthly temperatures range from around 8°C in winter to 20-22°C in summer, with occasional temperatures above 30°C.

TRAVELLING TO JERSEY

Ferry chaperone service

Children under the age of 16 cannot travel alone with DFDS Ferries. St Brelade’s College offers a chaperone service for journeys between St Malo and Jersey.

The parent/guardian will need to check the child in at the harbour and also wait until they have passed through the boarding gate with the chaperone, in case of any problems with the immigration authorities.

The parent/guardian is also expected to collect the child when they arrive back at the harbour with the chaperone.

ARRIVING IN JERSEY

Arrival & departure days

Our standard junior accommodation arrangements are based on arrival on Sunday and departure on Saturday. Saturday arrivals may be possible by prior arrangement and may incur an additional charge. Unfortunately, Sunday departures are not possible.

Please confirm arrival and departure details with the school as soon as travel has been arranged.

Meeting the host or residence team

Students will receive their homestay details approximately two weeks before arrival.

The host or a designated representative will meet students at the airport or harbour and take them to their accommodation. Students staying in a residence may be met by a member of the residence team or an arranged driver. They will carry a St Brelade’s College welcome sign to help students identify them.

Students will also be taken back to the airport or harbour at the end of their stay.

If the host or school representative is not present, the student or chaperone must contact the school’s emergency number.

FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

Study centres

Junior holiday courses take place at Highlands College from 28th June to 23rd July 2027. All other junior and adult courses take place at St Brelade’s College during this period, and all courses take place at St Brelade’s College outside these dates.

Please make sure your child knows what course they are taking and where they will be studying.

When do lessons start?

  • St Brelade’s College: Students should arrive at 9:00 on their first day for an induction session and multiple-choice placement test.
  • Highlands College: Students should arrive at 9:45 on their first day for an induction session and placement test.

Getting to school

Transport arrangements depend on the student’s age, course, accommodation and study centre.

The arrangements may include a private school minibus, a public bus pass or walking to school, depending on the student’s age and where they are staying.

Hosts or residence team will explain how to get to school on the first day, including bus times, pick-up points and the location of stops.

POCKET MONEY AND SPENDING

Pocket money

Course fees include the scheduled lessons, activities and transport specified for the course. Pocket money is generally needed for additional weekend activities not included in the programme, souvenirs, snacks, ice creams and other personal purchases.

We recommend allowing approximately £50 per week for pocket money, depending on your child’s spending habits and the activities they plan to take part in. This is a guide rather than a requirement.

Pre-paid cards

We recommend that students bring a prepaid bank card rather than cash for the following reasons:

  • More and more places, such as DFDS ferries, no longer accept cash payments. Prepaid cards are widely accepted.
  • Prepaid cards can easily be topped up if your child runs out of money.
  • If a card is lost, it can usually be frozen or cancelled.
  • Currency exchange facilities are limited in Jersey, and cash can no longer be exchanged on DFDS ferries. Exchange rates for cash are also generally unfavourable.

For example, Revolut <18 offers an account and card for eligible young people, managed by a parent or guardian. Please check the provider’s current terms and availability in your country.

Jersey uses both British pounds sterling and Jersey pounds, which have the same value and are interchangeable on the island.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND EMERGENCIES

Medical details

Students should inform the school before arrival about any medical conditions, allergies, dietary requirements, medication or additional needs that may affect their stay.

Students should follow the school’s safety instructions, respect other students and staff, and follow the travel and supervision arrangements explained to them. They should ask a member of staff for help whenever they are unsure what to do or if they need help.

Safety and important information

Students should read the following safety guidance and school policies before travelling to Jersey.

  • Road safety: Jersey’s Highway Code provides guidance on staying safe when walking, crossing roads and travelling around the island.
  • Beach safety: The RNLI advises on beach safety. Always follow local safety signs and lifeguard instructions.
  • Mobile phone policy: Our mobile phone policy explains how students may use their phones during their stay.
  • Safeguarding: Our safeguarding policy outlines how we help keep students safe and who to contact in case of a concern.
  • Terms & Conditions: Our junior terms & conditions detail course arrangements, rules and responsibilities.

Documentación de viaje

ASSICURAZIONE
