2. CLASSES
2.1. Placement of students
- Maximum class size: 10 students for general English classes
- St Brelade’s College accepts students of all ages and nationalities. In the summer, the main study centre is used for adults and teenagers (14+ years) on more academic courses, with a separate centre for junior holiday course students from 28th June to 23rd July 2027.
- At other times of year – especially during school holidays – there may be groups of younger students studying at the centre.
- Separate classes & student lounges are provided for adults and juniors, however during school holidays teenagers (16+ years) may join adult classes when following the intensive course. All other areas of the centre are shared by adults and juniors.
2.2. Attendance
If students are unable to attend school for any reason they should telephone the office as early as possible to notify them of their absence. If they are unable to telephone or email they should speak to the office as soon as they return to school.
2.3. Course expulsion
Students are expected to treat staff, other students, accommodation providers and members of the local community with respect and to follow the school’s reasonable instructions and rules. Bullying, harassment, discrimination, threats, violence, serious misconduct, illegal activity or behaviour that puts the safety or wellbeing of others at risk will not be tolerated.
Depending on the nature and seriousness of the incident, the school may issue a warning, impose appropriate restrictions or terminate the student’s course and accommodation arrangements. In serious cases, the school reserves the right to expel a student immediately, without prior warning. No refund will normally be given where a student is expelled for misconduct. Any reasonable additional costs arising from the student’s removal or alternative arrangements will be the student’s responsibility, where applicable.
2.4. 50+ course
Classes may include students on other programmes, however the majority of the students in the class are aged 50 years or over. Some excursions and social evenings are also shared with other adult students.
3. ACCOMMODATION
3.1. Arrival & departure
Homestay/residence accommodation fees are payable by the week. Extra nights may be accepted by prior arrangement at an extra fee. We request students arrive Saturday or Sunday and depart Saturday. Sunday departures are only accepted by prior arrangement and may incur an extra fee in addition to any extra nights payable.
3.2. What to expect from homestay
Homestay providers include families, couples, individuals, single parents and retired people. Accommodation normally includes a shared bathroom and students should be aware that they could be located in a homestay anywhere in Jersey. For students who wish to be assured of a private bathroom and a location near the study centre or the main town, we recommend booking a guest house or student residence.
Homestay accommodation includes breakfast and dinner plus use of linen and towels. Homestay providers are expected to provide a light laundry once per week.
Hosts are expected to include students as full members of their household. This includes eating most evening meals together and giving students use of most of the household common areas.
3.3. Changing homestay
Students who wish to change or leave their homestay after arrival must first contact Student Services and explain their concerns. The school will investigate the matter, discuss the concerns with the student and, where appropriate, the host, and make reasonable efforts to resolve any issues.
If the school considers the accommodation unsuitable, or the concerns cannot reasonably be resolved, it will make reasonable efforts to arrange alternative accommodation, subject to availability.
If, following investigation, the school considers that the homestay meets its accommodation standards but the student nevertheless wishes to move or leave, one week’s notice and payment for that period will normally be required. Any additional costs arising from the change may also be payable by the student.
3.4. Student residences
Included in the price of the residence is a light continental breakfast (Peterborough House only, during high season), towels & linen (not including beach towels), weekly room cleaning. Students can use the communal kitchen in the evenings and must clear up after themselves. Students may also use the laundry room at specified times for a small fee.
Transfers to the residence are not provided. Students will be given details of how to access the residence in advance, however their room may not be ready until after 15:00. Bags can be left in the storeroom prior to check-in.
There may be times when there are children staying in the residence, when accompanied by their parents.
3.5. Transport to the study centre
St Brelade’s College provides a public bus pass for adult students staying in homestay accommodation (unless within walking distance of the study centre). The location of the bus stops is normally around 5 to 10 minutes walk from the homestay but in some cases students may have to walk for up to 20 minutes to the location of the bus stop. In most cases students should expect to spend around 30 minutes on the bus, although in some cases the scheduled journey time may be up to 1 hour. Students staying at Beachside will also be provided with a bus pass on their first day at school.
Peterborough House adult residence is a 5-10 minute walk from the study centre.
4. CHANGES, CANCELLATIONS & TRAVEL DISRUPTION
4.1. Changes to courses and services
St Brelade’s College reserves the right to make reasonable changes to courses, study centre locations, accommodation arrangements, activities, timetables and other programme arrangements where necessary. This may be due to circumstances beyond the school’s control, including adverse weather, transport disruption, staff availability, safety concerns or changes imposed by external providers.
Where a change is necessary, the school will make reasonable efforts to provide a suitable alternative, taking into account the circumstances and the safety and welfare of students. Activities may be substituted or rescheduled, and the school cannot guarantee that all advertised activities will take place as originally planned.
If the school has to cancel a course or is unable to provide a significant part of the services booked, it will inform the student as soon as reasonably practicable and explain any available alternatives or applicable refund arrangements.
The school will not be responsible for additional costs incurred by the student as a result of changes or cancellations caused by circumstances beyond its reasonable control, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.
4.2. Travel delays and cancellations
Students are responsible for arranging their travel to and from Jersey and should ensure that suitable travel insurance is in place.
If a flight or ferry is delayed, cancelled or rescheduled, resulting in a student needing to stay in Jersey beyond their planned departure date, additional accommodation, meals, transport and other related costs may apply. These costs will be the responsibility of the student.
St Brelade’s College will endeavour to assist with arranging suitable accommodation and making necessary arrangements where reasonably possible, subject to availability and the student’s welfare. However, homestay providers and residence accommodation may not be available for an extended stay. Students may therefore need to move to a different host family or alternative accommodation, potentially at short notice.
5. OTHER
5.1. Emergencies & healthcare
Before arrival, students should inform St Brelade’s College of any medical conditions, allergies, medication, disability or special educational learning needs that may affect their participation in the course or activities, or that the school may need to consider to support their health, safety and welfare.
In the event of an accident or medical emergency, the school will take reasonable steps to assist the student, including providing basic first aid, contacting emergency services and the student’s nominated emergency contact, where necessary.
Students are responsible for ensuring that they have access to any medication they require and for arranging appropriate medical and travel insurance.
Students are advised that Jersey does not offer free emergency medical treatment for many countries and they may be required to pay for any medical treatment. For more information on which countries Jersey does have reciprocal healthcare agreements with, go to www.gov.je For non-urgent medical problems, an appointment with a doctor may be required, and students will be expected to pay the doctors fees (approx. £100).
St Brelade’s College has some wheelchair accessible areas and facilities, however some aspects of the programme e.g. transportation may require extra organisation. We recommend students requiring wheelchair access contact us to discuss their needs before booking.
5.2. Insurance
We strongly advise students to take out insurance at the time of booking the trip. This should ensure cover if the student needs to cancel the course before departure or during their stay due to factors such as illness, emergency medical expenses, travel costs and personal belongings etc. Special insurance for language course students can be purchased from some insurance providers.
5.3. Complaints
St Brelade’s College will attempt to resolve any complaints quickly and fairly. In such an event, students should explain their cause for complaint as soon as is practicably possible to the management. Where it can be proven that the grounds for complaint are just, the school will attempt to rectify the problem immediately.
5.4. Damage to property
Students are expected to treat school premises, accommodation, host family homes, transport, activity venues and any property belonging to others with care and respect.
Where a student causes damage to property through deliberate actions, misuse or negligence, they may be required to pay the reasonable cost of repair or replacement. Any charge will reflect the actual cost of the damage, taking account of the circumstances.
Students must report any accidental damage to a member of staff or their accommodation provider as soon as possible. Each incident will be considered on its individual circumstances.
5.5. Liability
St Brelade’s College takes reasonable steps to provide the agreed services and to protect the health, safety and welfare of students in its care. However, some activities and aspects of travel and accommodation involve risks that cannot be entirely eliminated.
The school will not be responsible for any loss, damage, injury or failure to provide a service to the extent that it arises from circumstances beyond the school’s reasonable control, subject to applicable law.
Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes or limits any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
5.6. Promotional materials
Students are always consulted at the time of taking photos. By agreeing to the use of photography or videos taken by St Brelade’s College staff, you are allowing the school to use these for the promotion of the school and it’s programmes through social media updates and promotional materials, such as brochures, leaflets and the website. If requested, St Brelade’s College will stop using images at any time, in which case they will not be used in future promotions but may continue to appear in promotions already in circulation. These images have no commercial or contractual value.
5.7. Student safeguarding policy
St Brelade’s College has a duty of care to children and young people attending the school and aims to ensure that staff, group leaders, accommodation providers and other suppliers help to keep them safe. Visit our student safeguarding policy website.
St Brelade’s College understands its responsibilities under the Counter Terrorism & Securities Act 2015 to prevent people of all ages being radicalised or drawn into terrorism and seeks to meet its obligations following its policies and procedures. PREVENT training is considered part of safeguarding and so concerns about radicalisation would also be reported.
5.8. Personal information
St Brelade’s College collects and uses personal information about students to manage bookings, organise courses and accommodation, make travel arrangements and provide appropriate care and supervision. This may include contact details, emergency contacts, and relevant information about a student’s health, dietary needs, welfare and participation in activities.
