Find out what’s involved in hosting international students

What to expect from hosting students

Homestay is a popular option for students coming to Jersey from abroad for either the short or longer term. It offers students full immersion into British life and language and hosts benefit from meeting new people, experiencing new cultures and earning extra income.

St Brelade’s College has been placing students in homestay for over 40 years. Every year, we place around 1,500 students in homestay. Depending on the time of year we have different students studying at the school; from the age of 10 years to mature students. They come predominantly from European countries for 1 to 2 weeks, however we do also receive students from further afield, as well as those studying for longer periods. The school provides a programme of English lessons and activities for students throughout the week so the responsibilities for hosts fall predominantly in the evenings and weekends.

Our British Council accreditation means that we provide a constant set of criteria and thorough information for homestay providers so they know what to expect. We also have a team of staff, who are there to provide support for hosts when needed.

Hosts aren’t restricted to families, we also have individuals, couples, single parents and retirees hosting. Each type of host gains something different from it, depending on whether they are hosting adults or children. Parents often appreciate bringing up their children with influences from other cultures whilst earning extra income, couples or retirees may like having people around after their own children have left home and individuals are likely to make lasting friendships.

Come to our open day

If you haven’t hosted students before, we realise that you may have a lot of questions about whether it’s right for you, how it can fit in with your lifestyle and what you can gain from it. We’re running an open day, where you can find out whether it’s something for you.

Pop in for some more information and we can chat through what’s involved over a cup of tea or coffee.
